David Griffith

Biography

Dave Griffith is the author of A Good War is Hard to Find: The Art of Violence in America (Soft Skull Press), a collection of essays meditating on how representations of violence in film, literature, and news media shape our collective understanding of violence as a means of solving problems. His current book project, Pyramid Scheme: Making Art and Being Broke in America concerns the mythologies surrounding art-making and creativity and the changing role of the artist in American culture. His research interests include the personal essay, narrative medicine, creative writing pedagogy, the Catholic literary tradition, academic advising, and representations of students, educators, and learning in literature. Griffith’s research and writing has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the University of Southern California’s Institute for Advanced Catholic Study, and the Heinz Endowments. Griffith advises first-year students in the College of Arts and Letters, and teaches courses in Narrative Medicine, Catholic literature, and Writing and Rhetoric.
