This conference considered regulatory issues surrounding the use of engineered nanomaterials. Contributions had a full grounding in research-based understanding of the physical, chemical, and toxicological properties of nanomaterials and considered legal, ethical, and philosophical perspectives. Industry representatives and academics participated in one conversation with extraordinary breadth that occurred at a historical moment when (1) rapid technological advances in nano promised benefit to humanity, (2) the aggregate of the nanotoxicology studies reported to date were contradictory and inconclusive, and (3) existing regulations and definitions of nano were found lacking by some in the fields of law and industry.
