Inside, Outside, and Across Disciplines: Gender, Race, and Concepts of Difference

The Association for Feminist Epistemologies, Methodologies, Metaphysics, and Science Studies (FEMMSS) is a professional organization dedicated to promoting feminist work in epistemology, the study of methodology, metaphysics, and science and technology studies. FEMMSS has a strong commitment to work that crosses boundaries among disciplines and between the academy and the public. FEMMSS also affirms the importance of work that brings the methodologies of the humanities and the sciences to bear upon one another. Through conferences, projects, and publications we provide a forum where philosophers, historians, scientists, and others can engage each other and develop research and pedagogical skills that not only influence our fields, but reach beyond academic work into the public sphere. FEMMSS is committed to supporting emerging scholars, particularly from diverse and underrepresented groups. We are also committed to local and global justice inside and outside of the academy.

FEMMSS 6 will explore themes such as:

1. Interrogating social boundary concepts
2. Inclusive institutions

3. Implicit bias and stereotype threat

4. Epistemologies of ignorance

5. Feminist epistemologies, metaphysics, and methodologies across disciplines

6. Rhetoric, argument, and communication

7. The ethics and politics of biomedical research

8. Strategies for equity in STEM fields

The 6th FEMMSS Meeting at Notre Dame this fall will feature a Keynote Address by Dr. Dorothy Roberts, the George A. Weiss University Professor of Law and Sociology and the Raymond Pace and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander Professor of Civil Rights, University of Pennsylvania. Her talk is titled “Gender, Race, and Dangerous Mothers in the Old and New Bioscience” and will be held on Monday, October 3rd at 9 am in McKenna Hall Auditorium.
