The John J. Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values will host the annual meeting of the International Society for Military Ethics (ISME) from October 13-16, 2013. This year's conference is titled "Military Virtues and Contemporary Challenges."

This year's program is wide-ranging and deals with everything from character, virtue, and integrity, to the moral and ethical challenges posed by new technologies. There will be three keynote lectures that are free and open to the public. They will take place in McKenna Hall Auditorium. They are:

  • Monday, October 14 at 9:00 AM:
    Alasdair MacIntyre, Notre Dame
    "Military Ethics: A Discipline in Crisis"
     
  • Monday, October 14 at 7:30 PM:
    Herb Lin, Chief Scientist, CSTB, National Academy of Science "Understanding Ethical, Legal, and Societal Issues Related to Emerging Technologies of Military Significance"
     
  • Tuesday, October 15 at 9:00 AM:
    Steven H. Walker, Deputy Director, DARPA
    "Driving Technological Surprise and Some of the Ethical, Legal, and Societal Implications that Can Result"
