"Prophet, Priest, Professional: The Offices of the American Scientist, 1887-1910"
As part of an exploratory attempt to understand the role of science and scientists in US society at the turn of the twentieth century, this talk will offer a means of finding a unifying vision/purpose which underlies the various roles occupied by scientists at the time. Borrowing from the theological concept of the Three Offices of Christ, I will suggest that American scientists, though diverse in their disciplinary, institutional, or professional contexts, generally shared a recognition of science as being a means of social uplift for early-twentieth-century America.
